Story
Bristol-born artist Joe Volk was one of the first musicians signed to Invada Records (including Sleaford Mods, Beak >, the label of Geoff Barrow (Portishead, BEAK >), as the singer of the band Gonga. After hearing Volk’s own songs, Barrow also immediately signed him as a solo artist, His first solo album was produced by Portishead guitarist Adrian Utley. He became known to a wider audience as the singer, guitarist and (co)songwriter of Crippled Black Phoenix, where he was their only permanent member alongside Justin Greaves between 2006 and 2013. After Volk left the band, he released a 12″ EP with Japanese band Boris on Invada Records and toured with them. Shortly after Volk moved to Switzerland, he signed his contract with Glitterhouse Records and released his fan and press acclaimed album Happenings and Killings. In 2020 Primitive Energetics now follows together with his band under the name Joe Volk + Naiare.
