Story
Jeffrey Lee Pierce was a founding member, guitarist and lead singer of The Gun Club, who disbanded with the death of their frontman in 1996. Exactly ten years later, in 2006, the English musician Cypress Grove, who had a friendship and close artistic collaboration with Jeffrey Lee Pierce, got hold of old recordings they had made together; this gave rise to the idea of The Jeffrey Lee Pierce Sessions Project.
With this series, Cypress Grove and a number of collaborating musicians pay tribute to Jeffrey Lee Pierce as one of the most influential, but also most underrated US singer-songwriters and at the same time set themselves the task of transporting his art into the present day. The conceptual idea is to have companions and admirers reinterpret songs by the artist, who only turned 40, to set snippets of lyrics to music, to use the invitation to experiment, to breathe life into previously unused material… The unusually prominent selection of artists paying tribute here shows the great relevance of the artist, whose songs themselves, in their compositional and lyrical quality, form the basis for particularly outstanding and unusual cover versions. This acoustic Hall Of Fame features artists such as Iggy Pop, Nick Cave, Debbie Harry and Dave Gahan alongside (as yet) unknowns, great talents and selected connoisseurs of Jeffrey Lee Pierce’s artistic legacy.
The Jeffrey Lee Pierce Sessions Project has been released on Glitterhouse Records since the first edition of the series was released in 2010.
