Coming Sep 29 via Glitterhouse Records.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/>Conceived in 2006 by the late Gun Club titan\u2019s guitarist <strong>Cypress Grove<\/strong> the Project has always aimed to highlight Pierce as one of America\u2019s most fascinatingly influential singer-songwriters of the last century while propelling his outpourings into modern times by placing it in the hands of former collaborators, friends and <strong>fans.<\/strong> Following 2009\u2019s We Are Only Riders, 2012\u2019s The Journey Is Long and 2014\u2019s Axels and Sockets, The Task Has Overwhelmed Us presents stellar interpretations of tracks from Pierce\u2019s Gun Club and solo canons along with fresh works constructed from rehearsal skeletons, previously unheard lyrics, songs only performed live. Taking song ideas without lyrics and words looking for musical settings gave rise to what Cypress Grove calls \u201cFrankenstein songs\u201d.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/><strong>Jeffrey Lee Pierce<\/strong> first roared out of the tunnel in 1981 with the massively influential punk-blues of the Gun Club\u2019s Fire Of Love debut. This was followed by monolithic titles including Miami, The Las Vegas Story and Mother Juno along with solo albums including Wildweed and Ramblin\u2019 Jeffrey Lee &amp; Cypress Grove With Willie Love. In March 1996, <strong>Jeffrey Lee Pierce<\/strong> died after suffering a brain haemorrhage.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then along came London-based guitarist <strong>Cypress Grove<\/strong>, who\u2019d played with Jeffrey in his final years gigging and on 1992\u2019s Ramblin\u2019 Jeffrey Lee &amp; Cypress Grove With Willie Love. Sorting out his loft one day in 2006, Cypress found an anonymous cassette containing bedroom rehearsals for Ramblin\u2019\u2026 <em>\u201cvery vague but good enough to work from,\u201d he says. \u201cSo I had the idea of asking people who worked with Jeffrey, were friends with him or who simply admired his work to help me complete the songs.\u201d<\/em><br\/>\u201cThe Cypress Tape\u201d would soon be joined by other unrealized song sources from diverse tapes supplied by key characters in Jeffrey\u2019s life coming on board, including <strong>Gene Temesy<\/strong>, who started the Gun Club fan club in 1984 and brought home Pierce\u2019s \u201898 autobiography Go Tell The Mountain, writer-DJ-musician <strong>Phast Phreddie Patterson<\/strong> and Jeffrey\u2019s sister <strong>Jacqui<\/strong>, who supplied unfinished songs and previously unseen writings she\u2019d discovered after her brother\u2019s death. <em>\u201cThe source material for some of the songs was so vague that it could be interpreted in many ways,\u201d says Cypress. \u201cThere was no definitive or \u2018original\u2019 version. It was like trying to restore a painting where much of the material was missing.\u201d <\/em>said Cypress.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From <strong>Dave Gahan<\/strong>\u2019s opening haunted piano ballad take on \u2018Mother of Earth\u2019 through, for example, <strong>Mark Lanegan<\/strong> singing \u2018Go Tell The Mountain\u2019 backed by <strong>Warren Ellis<\/strong> and <strong>Nick Cave<\/strong> (who back Jeffrey himself on \u2018Yellow Eyes\u2019), Cave duetting beautifully with <strong>Debbie Harry<\/strong> again on \u2018On the Other Side\u2019 to <strong>Sendelica<\/strong> and Secret Knowledge\u2019s <strong>Wonder<\/strong> hotwiring \u2018Bad America\u2019 into caterwauling mayhem mixed by veteran electro-Def Jam producer <strong>Jay Burnett<\/strong>, NY rapper <strong>Dynamax<\/strong> acknowledging Jeffrey\u2019s hiphop obsession over the juddering beats. The stellar roll-call of contributors features also Lydia Lunch, Youth, Jim Jones, Mark Stewart, Hugo Race, Cypress Grove, Mick Harvey and J.P.
