Story

“You know, I’d like to go on tour in L.A.” dachte sich Josh Haden, seines Zeichens Bassist und Sänger von Spain, eines schönen April Morgens 2016. Das Gründungsmitglied des Slowcore Americana Kollektivs griff kurzer Hand zum Telefon und kontaktierte den Besitzer einer Bar in L.A. Downtown namens The Love Song. Schnell wurde man sich einig und Spain traten fortan jeden Dienstagabend zwischen Mai 2016 und März 2017 im Love Song auf. “It’s a part of the historic Regent Theater, built in 1924, the room oozes old school charm and classic Martinis. It’s like being in a film noir movie!” sagt Josh über die Bar.

“One of the things we started doing on tour in Europe was inviting guests to join us on stage. It was fun for us and I think the fans enjoyed it also. No two shows were alike. I took this idea and expanded it to our L.A. Residency” so Josh. Über das Jahr verteilt wurden Spain (bestehend aus Josh Haden, Gitarrist Kenny Lyon, Keyboarder/Gitarrist Shon Sullivan und Drummer Danny Frankel) musikalisch von Gästen wie u. a. dem Grammy nominierten Jazz Gitarristen Bill Frisell, Sun Ra Schlagzeuger Craig Haynes, Violinistin und Sängerin Petra Haden (Josh’s Schwester), Best Coast Gitarrist Bobb Bruno, ex-Circle Jerks Multiinstrumentalist Zander Schloss, dem ehemaligen Macy Grey Saxofonisten Matt DeMerritt und Lili Haydn an der Violine unterstützt.

Während Spain’s vergangener Europatour, begann der gelernte Jazz Bassist die Shows mit seinem tragbaren Live Recorder mitzuschneiden. Zurück in L.A. versuchte er dies auch für die Love Song Shows umzusetzen und bekam dabei Unterstützung von Musikproduzent Nate Pottker. Das Ergebnis war so überragend, dass Spain ein paar dieser Aufnahmen auf ihrer Bandcamp Seite veröffentlichten: “I began posting these recordings to the Spain bandcamp page and our European record label Glitterhouse heard one of them and said ‘We want to put that on vinyl!’”.

“Nate and I went even further” führt Josh weiter aus, “I burrowed through all the recordings and picked what I thought best represented the Spain at the Love Song experience. Some of our greatest moments with Bill Frisell, Petra Haden, Bobb Bruno, and others are represented on this record. I didn’t want to put any effects on the tracks or try to make it sound like a studio album. I wanted the listener to feel what it’s like to come and hear Spain on any given Tuesday night at the Love Song.”

Spain sind derzeit noch jeden letzten Donnerstag im Monat live in der Love Song Bar zu sehen. Außerdem arbeiten die Slowcore-Pioniere an ihrem siebten Studioalbum. “Our Love Song gig has really inspired me. Not only is it a lot of fun and a place to try out new songs, but it gives me ideas on how we should make the next record. It’s been a huge honor to play with all these great musicians. That sense of spontaneity and adventure is what I want to convey on our next studio album.”
