Story
The eternal insider tip? Does not have to be! Spain was founded back in 1993 by Josh Haden, bassist and singer. Their music has often been described as “Indie Pop Slowcore Americana Free Jazz”. The band is best known for their debut album The Blue Moods Of Spain, as well as their song Spiritual, which was reinterpreted by Johnny Cash on his album Unchained. Director Wim Wenders used the music of the Californian quartet in the soundtrack of his film Am Ende der Gewalt. Uncut Magazine wrote at the time: “Of all the melancholy slowcore bands of the 1990s, Spain were one of the most inventive: an unselfconscious, blues-tickled LA group who regularly sound like Spiritualized crossed with a cool jazz quartet. Haden’s quiet dissection of his own doubts and guilt is unsettling, akin to furtively eavesdropping on an intimate conversation … a heartily underrated band.”
