We’re more than happy to show you „La La Los Angeles“ by The Coathangers, the third single taken from the final chapter of The Jeffrey Lee Pierce Sessions Project.

Atlanta garage-punk trio The Coathangers are a new name to the Project, recruited by musical director Cypress Grove after he was sent a video of the all-female band laying into the Gun Club‘s ‘Sex Beat‘.“I immediately loved the energy of the band, and they seemed like an obvious candidate for volume four. So I went to see them when they played in London. I spoke to them afterwards and showed them the previous volumes. They were immediately intrigued and seemed particularly keen on the idea of writing music to an unused Jeffrey lyric. Even though the band are from Atlanta, La La Los Angeles seemed a good fit for them and their music” says Cypress.

Forming in 2006, The Coathangers – singer-guitarist Julia Kugel, bassist Meredith Franco and singer/drummer Stephanie Luke (although they routinely swap instruments on stage) have released a swarm of singles and EPs plus six albums (2019’s styleblossoming The Devil You Know continuing to embrace country ballads and classic pop). Fired by a long-time love of Jeffrey’s catalogue, that ‘Sex Beat’ cover (released on a split single with These Arms Are Snakes in 2013) has spawned a contagious, rockabillyinflected dream date ten years later. “The Task Has Overwhelmed Us” is the long-awaited fourth volume in The Jeffrey Lee Pierce Sessions Project series, ‘La La Los Angeles’ by The Coathangers is the third single release from the album. “When we met Cypress Grove all those years ago in London and he suggested that we work on this project, we were all over the moon with excitement. Having been huge fans of Gun Club for years, the chance to collaborate with Jeffrey Lee Pierce was an opportunity of a lifetime. When we received the type written lyrics and brought them into the practice space, it was a truly magical, emotional moment. Humbled and in awe, we worked out a tune that felt bent in the right direction by the auteur himself. He was in the room and he was steering the ship. It is an honor and a great privilege to be able to put the cutting, clever lyrics to music and we hope we did them justice. The experience was so incredibly special and precious. Grateful to have been entrusted with such an opportunity.
