Story
The last four years have been extremely intense for the band around frontwoman Cato van Dijck. The Dutch-New Zealand trio was formed in Amsterdam in 2012. It didn’t take long for MY BABY to captivate fans and critics alike. Even the critical English press was quick to agree that MY BABY would have a bright future: “Psychedelic tapestries of sounds” was how Clash Magazine described the sound, Q Magazine headlined “acid-fried country stompers that will haunt your dreams for weeks”. In 2015, the follow-up “Shamanaid” was released and MY BABY played over 200 shows in that year alone, including South Africa, New Zealand, USA, UK and Germany. The band supported Seasick Steve and Larry Graham and won the Edison Pop Award in 2016.
Now they are ready for the rellease of their third albumPrehistoric Rhythm‚: „We recorded this album primarily on a ‘4-track ampex deck’ from the fifties. We wanted it to sound old so you feel as though you experience something not linked to the present, but rather like traveling through different era’s“ Sheik says.
With minimal means, MY BABY maximizes stylistic range: slide guitars meet soulful-hippiesque vocals and trip-hop beats, creating a mix of desert blues, indie, hippie rock, psychedelia and electronica. „Over the past two or three decades’, electronic dance music has become a huge part of our culture. It’s hard to fathom just how many people connect and celebrate life by going to dance parties and raves.” Daniel Johnston says of the new influences. “These gatherings are quite similar to tribal celebrations and rituals that have been around for thousands of years across all cultures in the world. The desire and need for those rituals remains and has become a fascination for us and we have made that trance-like hypnotic groove an essential part of our live performance, but it is also prevalent on a lot of the album. It’s funny to think of it. Going back to prehistoric times, people dancing round a fire together! It’s in our DNA“ he adds.
No other act currently possesses such fabulous class in the fusion of trance-like grooves with archaic beats, accomplished with the means of the blues.
Examples?
The gospel and voodoo spiritual inspired “Make a Hundred” is a dub blues that tells the story of a boisterous teenager, her excesses and the way out of her own problems. The first single, “Love Dance”, on the other hand, is like a spirit incantation that aims to find identity, love and spirituality.
MY BABY have not only reinvented themselves musically, the trio has also taken their live show to a new level, combining lightshow, visuals and music into a unique hypnotizing experience: „We try to ensure the audience’s senses are captivated as we try to emulate something akin to a tribal celebration. It must tell a story where the audience becomes part of“ – Cato van Dijck.
