There are three great works of our time: the Bible as a culture-creating and culture-destroying blueprint from a long-forgotten era, the computer game “Building Cars with Willy Werkel,” and the breathtakingly epic biography of Germany’s first emperor, Franz Beckenbauer. Now they are joined by a fourth that puts everything in the shade. “Our Charping”, the debut album of the band Scharping.
Scharping from the most awful city in Germany. Not from Munich. No, from Berlin on the Spree comes this group that tries with an even rigorous force to make the music world reel. These are Jermain Mikel Herold (Lost Girls), Angelo Fonfara (Nille Promille), Christian Heerdt(Botschaft) and Kevin Kuhn (Die Nerven). Four characters, characterized by youthful exuberance and a feeling for hooklines and good songs that is almost like a truffle pig. Four singers and lyricists, all gifted with an extremely subtle sense of humor that runs the gamut from feeble to profound. A group so consistently inconsistent that it hurts – if their record didn’t ensnare us so tenderly.
Fasten your seatbelts and let yourself be carried away into the vastness of a long-playing record, whose hymns will accompany you far beyond your vacation – because nothing else is listening to “Our Charping” – into everyday life. Scharping make use of familiar stylistic elements of the most diverse genres, which couldn’t be more opposite on paper, and that also very often in the course of a single song. Disco and heavy, AOR and R&B, lounge and medieval. And why not, when it’s so darn catchy every time. Although Scharping’s music always bears its own signature, as far as the experimental approach and the sardonic humor are concerned, clear parallels can be drawn with such umbrella weirdos as Mr. Bungle, Frank Zappa, the Cardiacs and Ween. Scharping joins legends like Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Jennifer Rush and Huey Lewis & The News even more seamlessly; after all, all four have a song titled “The Power of Love.”
In the 40 minutes that comprise this album, variety is writ large, because variety is a main word. On the one hand, there are four-to-the-floor rock-disco bangers like the first single “Alternative zur Umwelt” and the “Hätte es Deutschen Rap schon 1978 gegeben” track “I Smoke Me Fat” with their infectious sing-along choruses. On the other hand, songs like “Schau dir dabei zu”, with Fleetwood Mac key tones. Just as forbidden but sexy as Falco, here you hear how beautiful and terrible obsession can be, or is it a critique of society’s dingfetish after all? Scharping deliberately leave us in the dark. And no matter what all the names are called. Whether “Susanna”, “Angie” or “Emily“ – Scharping knows them all. „Our Charping“It starts where the Bible loses its sex appeal and ends where the moon and the sun say hello to each other: in a distant galaxy, so far away that no sound waves from your pathetic Bluetooth box will arrive there, but the all-encompassing love energy that this album holds. It conveys a sense of longing for places and times that do not exist and never have. Scharping is the late musical revenge on Germany and the nightmare of the new generation. Scharping “Unser Charping” will be released on April 01 on Glitterhouse Records.
