Wir freuen uns sehr, im April 2024 das Debütalbum von ALÓWAN auf Glitterhouse Records veröffentlichen zu können. „Feathers“ ist das erste offizielle Album von Jean Yves Tola nach der Auflösung von 16 Horsepower im Jahr 2005. Als Gastmusiker:innen treten Chantal Acda, Calvin Dover (Dover Brothers), Steve Taylor (ex-16 Horsepower), Theo Hakola (Orchestre Rouge, Passion Fodder) und Felix Alsruhe in Erscheinung.

ALÓWAN zeigt eine Seite aus dem 16 Horsepower-Kosmos, die bisher so noch nicht zu hören war. Als Gründungsmitglied der Alternative Country Legende aus Denver, Colorado waren Tolas Arrangements, Ideen und sein Einfluss innerhalb der Band immer präsent. Jetzt kommt endlich seine ganz eigene musikalische Vision auf dem Debütalbum „Feathers“ zum Vorschein und zeigt seine Vielseitigkeit als Komponist, Produzent und Musiker. Tola präsentiert hier zehn wunderschöne dunkle Folk-Songs.“I was always very much involved in the creative process of all the bands I have been in. Even more so with 16 Horsepower, in the writing and arrangements process with David Eugene Edwards but also in the production and recording of the albums. I was working closely from the first take to the mastering sessions with the producers and the engineers and ended up learning a lot and it has helped me tremendously for the realization of this project.”

Jean Yves Tolas musikalische Sozialisationbegann im Alter von sechs Jahren als er Solfège (eine Tonlehre zur Gehör- und Gesangsbildung) lernte und in klassischer Musik unterrichtet wurde. Umgeben und beeinflusst von vier älteren Geschwistern, die allesamt Instrumente wie Klavier, Gitarre oder Geige spielten, außerdem alles von Mozart bis Dylan, Miles Davis bis hin zum Rock der 70er Jahre hörten, begann er im Alter von 15 Jahren Schlagzeug zu spielen. Danach wandte er sich der Punk- und Cold-Wave-Szene zu und wurde Mitglied mehrerer Pariser Bands, bis er sich Ende der 80er Jahre Passion Fodder (ehemals Orchestre Rouge) anschloss und nach Los Angeles zog. Nach drei Alben und diversen Tourneen zog es ihn weiter und er stieg in David Eugene Edwards Band The Denver Gentleman ein, um kurz danach mit Edwards und Pascal Humbert zusammen 16 Horsepower zu gründen.

“16 Horsepower was my life. I played in it, created and arranged the music with David, took care of the business side of things and finally also managed the band on and off the road after we left A&M Records and joined with Glitterhouse Records. It was a 24/7 deal and I loved it. Signing with Glitterhouse was a great move. The whole team was amazing to work with, very efficient, and gave us the real freedom to soar in Europe – and we did!”

16 Horsepower lösten sich 2005 bedauerlicherweise auf, erlangten aber in Europa und den USA Kultstatus. Bis heute wird ihr Werk von Fans wie Presse verehrt. David Eugene Edwards veröffentlichte nach 16 Horsepower beeindruckende Alben mit seiner Band Wovenhand. Nun ist auch Jean Yves Tola endlich zurück.

In den letzten zwei Jahren war Tola sehr beschäftigt mit Komponieren, Aufnehmen und Produzieren des Albums, „Feathers“ ist daher definitiv nicht nur eine Momentaufnahme. Jeder Song steht für sich selbst, aber die Verbindung zwischen ihnen ist offensichtlich: “Chantal Acda and I clicked right away. I liked her vocals and was not sure if she would be willing or interested to collaborate with me but she dove in right away. As we worked and talked, we soon realized how much we had in common besides the music. Horses, wolves, cold weather, nature, space.” Chantal Acda fügt hinzu:“It has been wonderful working on this beautiful music. In a way exciting – because this music was inviting me to do different things and adapt to Jean-Yves’ world. Both connected through horses surrounding us, we also found ourselves in the same place while making this album. Such a joy!”

Über den Bandnamen sagt Tola: „ALÓWAN is Lakota Sioux and is a ceremony involving singing over individual/s and ascribing status to him/her/them. Some people are sung over, honored, for deeds they accomplished.“
